Rupture or unusual trauma to the sesamoid apparatus creates an intra-articular, perpetuating inflammatory process. An orthosis should be incorporated into the treatment to limit ground reactive force on this area of the foot under the first metatarsal head. Other treatment modalities should be used to help reduce the inflammation process.
