Lateral Ankle Instability - Pathology and Treatment
Lateral ankle instability involves chronic inversion of the calcaneus and excessive supination of the subtalar joint (STJ). Orthotic therapy can effectively increase stability for patients with lateral ankle instability. The orthoses must increase the orthotic reactive force lateral to the STJ axis to create a greater pronatory torque. This inhibits supination and inversion. ProLab’s Pathology Specific Lateral Ankle Instability device is wide, with a custom-bevelled rearfoot post (for increased lateral stability) and a valgus forefoot extension.
