Guidelines for Recasting

Recasting for the Best Results

Technology has made it simpler for practitioners to reorder orthotics for a patient without recasting. ProLab was one of the first labs to scan casts and store the image for reorders. There are, however, certain times when you may want to consider recasting. ProLab’s Medical Consultants recommend that practitioners consider recasting for new orthotics under the following conditions:

   Functional Foot Orthoses
  • more than 7 years since the previous casting
  • trauma or surgery to the foot/ankle since the previous casting
  • children who continue to grow
   Accommodative Foot Orthoses
  • new plantar lesions
  • extreme weight gain
  • significant arthritic changes
   Functional AFO
  • patients over 60 years old
  • 3 years or more since the previous AFO was dispensed
  • trauma or surgery to the foot/ankle since the previous casting
   Gauntlet Stabilizer AFO
  • due to the need for intimate contact with the foot/leg for stability, we recommend recasting with each new order
