Calcaneal Apophysitis - Pathology and Treatment
The probable pathology for calcaneal apophysitis is an inflammatory reaction at the secondary ossification center of the calcaneus, resulting from excessive sagittal plane pull of the Achilles tendon. For orthotic therapy to be successful, the foot must be converted into a more rigid lever by bridging the forefoot to the rearfoot. Achieving this with a tightly conforming orthosis reduces foot motion and decreases the effort required to lift the heel during propulsion. ProLab's Pathology Specific device for calcaneal apophysitis is a semi-rigid, wide device with a deep heel cup to help prevent posterior heel irritation. A cushioned heel pad, in conjunction with a rearfoot post and heel lift, reduces traction on the heel cord in the latter part of the gait cycle.
