The role of physical therapy in the management of musculoskeletal issues can not be over stated. The best long term patient outcomes, independent of area of interest, are the result of team management. Physical therapists are an vital part of the team. One of the advantages of the physical therapist in patient managment is the time allotted for PT care. Often times, the care and advice of physical therapy is offered on a routine basis over a long period of time. These practitioners observe patients frequently and modify their plans accordingly. Seeing a patient 2-3 times a week for 6 weeks allows the practitioner to really understand both the patient and their pathology. The depth and breadth of the offerings of physical therapy are strengthening, gait training/awareness, balance training, myofascial techniques, etc. The specialty areas such as feldendrais and rolfing can be an important adjunct to mainstream treatment.
One of my recommendations, is to contact local physical therapists to establish specialty areas that each may offer your patients. Well trained physical therapists are a valuable asset to your practice as they often assure long term improvement for your patients who have problems such as PT dysfunction, postural instability secondary to chronic ankle sprains, gait abnormalities due to immobility, fascial issues secondary to chronic pain/pathology and athletic injuries.
